Two Wollongong councillors are preparing motions to council to call for a ban, or strict restrictions, on coal seam gas mining in Wollongong.
The issue is dividing the community, with many farming, environmental and community groups opposed.
Those in favour locally include Apex Energy and TRUenergy, the owners of Wollongong's Tallawarra Power station.
Greens' councillor Jill Merrin has placed a notice of motion on the next Wollongong City Council agenda, while independent Greg Petty says he wants to see all local coal seam gas mining banned.
"I campaigned vigorously against coal seam gas, I believe the greater majority of people in Wollongong would like to see protection of our water supply and that means stopping coal seam gas in the local government area," he said.
"I am in the process of trying to prepare a motion for council and yes I would hope all councillors would support a ban on coal seam gas in the Wollongong local government area.
"I believe it needs to be banned."
