In this supposed era of clean energy can it make sense for a new open cut brown coal mine to be developed just west of Melbourne?
West Australian company Mantle Mining has said it's discovered a huge seam of brown coal under a farming community in Parwan, just outside Bacchus Marsh.
Mantle Mining is now seeking permission for an open cut mine in the area, from which it plans to export the coal to customers in India.
If this project is approved by the State Government it raises all sorts of interesting issues.
