One in six of Australia's black coal mines could close prematurely and more than 21 thousand mining-related jobs could go as a result of the carbon tax.
That's according to new data released by the industry on Monday.
A report by ACIL Tasman says 12 of the 30 underground mines in NSW and six of the 42 open-cut mines in Queensland are at risk of closing prematurely under the planned carbon tax.
It also estimates that 27 per cent of jobs in the sector are under threat.
