The discovery of an endangered bird may prevent the development of a $1 billion coal mine in central Queensland.
Mining magnate Clive Palmer's Waratah Coal is planning to build an open cut coal mine in the Bimblebox Nature Refuge near Alpha.
About 15 black-throated finches have been recorded at the site and the Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke must now consider whether to approve the project.
Greens Senator Larissa Waters has told AM Mr Burke has to call in the mine.
