Around 100 supporters joined a protest against the Coal Seam Gas mining industry.
MORE than 100 Townsville residents made their voices heard yesterday when they marched in opposition to coal seam gas extraction in Brisbane.
The passionate group was just one of several that rallied across Australia, as it called for a moratorium on the coal seam gas (CSG) industry, a Royal Commission into CSG and a ban on fracking - the process to break open aquifers using pressure and chemicals.
North Queensland Conservation Council coordinator Gail Hamilton yesterday said the rally was in a bid to protect farmers and waterways from coal seam gas mining and to prevent a national dependence on fossil fuels.
"Coal seam gas is not a good transitional fuel as leakages of methane mean it is no less polluting than coal, and in fact causes more environmental impact because of the potential damage to our groundwater," she said.
