The Gloucester Basin has been given Federal bio-regional status, and will now be included in wide-ranging research on the impact of coal seam gas extraction.
The new status mean science, not mining royalties, will decide the future of coal-seam gas drilling and open cut coal mining in the Gloucester Basin.
Lyne MP Rob Oakeshott says the community has successfully lobbied to have Gloucester put on the bioregional priority list.
Mr Oakeshott says local concerns include a Gloucester Resources plan for an open cut mine near the town.
He says the Commonwealth will spend 150-million dollars over four years for an Independent Expert Scientific Committee to assess the impacts of CSG on water.
