The Nationals have rejected rural independent MP Tony Windsor's planned protections for coal seam gas exploration in Australia, arguing they will burden farmers.
Nationals leader Warren Truss on Monday said he supported the idea of scientific assessments before giving projects the green light, but said Mr Windsor wanted to go "very much further".
"He wants to put in place a whole new environmental mechanism - green police," he told ABC Radio.
"He talks about 1000 to 2000 extra bureaucrats that will be trawling around farm properties ... I don't think farmers are going to be very keen about that."
Mr Windsor's plan was "simply going to be a burden rather an advancement".
