A coal seam gas company says a decision to halt its exploration on the Liverpool Plains of NSW doesn't set a precedent for future projects.
Santos has agreed to delay its test drilling at Spring Ridge after farmers blockaded the site for 20 days.
Santos spokesman Sam Crafter says the information gathered from this pilot work would have been used in a long-awaited water study for the local region.
But he says the company has listened to the farmers' concerns.
"Some of that data won't be able to be obtained and flow through to the water study, but it's also very important though that the community are engaged and understand what we're doing," he said.
"So on this occasion, we're happy to put off our drilling and go back and get that data further down the track."
