Poorly managed, coal seam gas exploration could prove an environmental and social disaster for Australia, the Nationals say.
But with the right checks in place, they say it has the potential to deliver a new economic boom for the country, not to mention its regional centres.
The Nationals on Sunday backed coal seam gas exploration, but released five core principles they say will ensure the process remains a positive for Australia.
They include a commitment to stop projects unless proven safe for the environment, keeping prime agricultural land at the top of the priority list, rejecting explorations close to homes and to see revenues reinvested back into communities.
