The NSW government has accused the opposition of "extraordinary hypocrisy", after NSW Labor leader John Robertson called for a suspension of all coal seam gas (CSG) licences.
Mr Robertson also urged the government to refuse any applications to expand existing operations, warning of irreparable damage to ground water and aquifers.
"Coal seam gas has the potential to damage our drinking water and compromise food security," he said on Thursday.
Mr Robertson said the government had rushed into CSG mining without fully understanding the potential impacts on the environment.
