The Federal National Party is stepping up pressure for stringent controls for coal seam gas development in areas like the Hunter Valley.
The party has released a blueprint for coal seam gas extraction.
It calls for a ban on operations in areas where ground and surface water could be at risk and stresses that prime agricultural land and residential areas must be protected.
National Party Leader Warren Truss says there could be dire environmental consequences without strict conditions.
"Well certainly the coal seam gas industry has the potential to provide enormous economic wealth to our nation and also to regional communities," he said.
