SYDNEY -(MarketWatch)- The owner of an Australian wine company will on Monday
present a petition to lawmakers in New South Wales state calling for the
cessation of coal seam gas mining in the Hunter Valley wine-growing region.
Bruce Tyrrell, who owns Tyrrell's Wines, will present a petition with 11,000
names on it to the Upper Hunter's member of parliament George Souris, according
to a statement.
Despite assurances from companies including Santos Ltd. that coal seam gas
extraction is safe, green groups and farmers fear the process, which involves
extracting water from coal seams buried hundreds of meters below the earth's
surface, could contaminate underground water supplies.
