Inner Sydney council blocks CSG drilling

A coal seam gas (CSG) well planned for a suburb in Sydney's inner west has been blocked by a local council.

It's a move that could have statewide ramifications.

The owner of the Dial-a-Dump site in St Peters had signed an agreement with mining company Dart Energy to drill a CSG well on the site.

But Marrickville Council unanimously voted on Tuesday to impose a condition prohibiting coal seam gas mining from going ahead at the site as part of the development application.

The council said it would also write to the NSW government requesting it not renew Dart Energy's licence to sink an exploratory well in St Peters.

Drew Hutton, president of Lock The Gate - an alliance of 120 groups - described it as "a momentous win".
