CANADA Bay council has joined other inner-west Sydney councils in opposing coal seam gas mining in the area.
Greens Cr Pauline Tyrrell said Dart Energy’s coal seam gas (CSG) exploration licence covered the whole of the Sydney metropolitan area, including the Canada Bay Council area.
Cr Tyrrell raised a motion against CSG mining which was passed at the council meeting last week.
A spokesman for the energy company did not rule out exploration in any specific areas.
“Dart Energy has commissioned an independent land use study that will recommend a small number of areas for exploration work within industrial and commercial areas,” he said.
The land use study has not yet been completed.
Cr Tyrrell said even if drilling happened somewhere else, it could affect water in a large area.
