A resources conference in Broken Hill has heard smaller mining companies are realistic about the future of their industry.
Mining companies, politicians and academics made addresses on the first day of the Resources and Energy Symposium in Broken Hill yesterday.
Around 500 mining delegates have gathered in the city for the three day event.
Chief Economist with the Commonwealth Bank, Michael Blythe, told the conference economic turmoil in Europe is affecting consumer sentiment in Australia.
"Not even a double-barrel rate cut earlier this month, a big cash splash in the budget, has been enough to feel people feel better.
"We've heard one highly-placed policy adviser in Canberra complain that it's almost as if most Australians think they actually are living in Greece."
While many companies were optimistic about future explorations, some said they were constrained by lack of funds, or looking for investment partners to dilute risk.
