TRADITIONAL owners of the land where Toro Energy plans Western Australia's first uranium mine have warned outsiders to stay away from their constructive talks with the company.
Senior Martu lawmen believe Toro has listened to their concerns in informal talks and they are ready to begin formal negotiations for a mining agreement with the company.
The South Australian-based company last week became the first of several explorers in the region to receive environmental approvals for a uranium mine within WA.
The mine is planned for 30km south of Wiluna, almost 1000km northeast of Perth. The 184,000sq km shire has a population of less than 2000.
Yesterday Darren Farmer, an indigenous spokesman for the native title claimants, said there was a range of views about the mine among the Martu.
