Councils query mining plans

Controversial: Camden and Wollondilly councils are concerned about coal seam gas mining in their local government areas.

CAMDEN and Wollondilly councils are among local government bodies that have expressed concern about coal seam gas mining.

Some NSW councils are even taking the law into their own hands when it comes to the practice, with Richmond Valley, Marrickville, Narrabri and Lismore councils deciding to set up moratoriums against coal seam gas mining in their areas.

Camden mayor Greg Warren said Camden Council staff were putting together a report on coal seam gas mining that would go before councillors in the near future.

"I can understand why some councils have taken that step," Cr Warren said. "My biggest concern is how this process may effect future residents who don't live there yet. That has to be a strong consideration."

Wollondilly mayor Col Mitchell said he was not completely against coal seam gas mining, but more investigation was needed.

"We want development applications put in [to the council] so we can let the community knows what's going on," Cr Mitchell said.
