Nats must back farmers

THE farmers' party needs to stand up for rural Australia on three key rural issues, writes LESLIE WHITE

Mining, foreign farm takeovers and supermarket power are three of the hottest topics in rural Australia.

Yet National Party policy is so far not matching its tough talk in these three areas.

First, it isn't fighting for farmers to be able to "lock the gate" on mining companies. It should.

If someone wants to dig up your land, you should be able to tell them to pay up or bugger off. After all, it's your land.

The Nationals released a coal-seam gas "blueprint" last year which is weak and vague and fails to argue for farmers to be able to decide the fate of their own property.

The party supported neither Greens Senator Larissa Waters' Bill giving farmers the right of veto nor independent Tony Windsor's Bill aimed at protecting groundwater from mining.

Good rural policy should be supported regardless of who puts it forward.
