Toro tipped for WA's first uranium mine

Western Australia could be a step closer to getting its first uranium mine.

Industry and equity market observers are tipping the state's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) will back Toro Energy's plan to construct its Wiluna mine in the Mid West region.

The EPA on Monday advised media it would make an announcement regarding its recommendation to WA Environment Minister Bill Marmion in relation to Toro Energy's proposal.

The Adelaide-based company previously said it expected the state and federal governments would make a decision on the project by mid-2012.

There are currently no uranium mines in WA

The Colin Barnett-led state government in 2008 lifted a six-year ban on uranium mining that was imposed by the previous Labor government.

Shortly after being elected in January to replace Eric Ripper, WA Labor leader Mark McGowan said his party would ban any new uranium mines if it won government, although it would make an exception for projects that had already been given final state government approval.
