ABOUT 100 protesters crowded outside AGL’s head office in North Sydney on Tuesday afternoon to rally against a proposed Coal Seam Gas project in the Gloucester Valley.
Members from the Barrington-Gloucester-Stroud Preservation Alliance made a pitt stop in North Sydney after their earlier protest in Martin Place, which attracted thousands of people.
Group founder Graeme Healy told the Daily AGL had approval to develop up to 330 gas wells in Gloucester and a central processing facility in Hexam without conducting an independent water study.
“If they’re so confident nothing’s going to happen to the land through Coal Seam Gas works, why are they resisting conducting an independent water study,” Mr Healy said.
He added the study would cost AGL millions of dollars but that was “small beer” for the profitable company.
An AGL spokeswoman said the project received development approval from the NSW government last year.
“Before that approval was granted AGL had to conduct a thorough environmental assessment to demonstrate that the project would not have any significant impact on the environment and the community,” she said.
Coal Seam Gas mining involves extracting water from coal seams.
