State Wont Rule out Coal Seam Gas Mining in St Peters

UNCERTAINTY still surrounds the St Peters coal seam gas site after state Energy Minister Chris Hartcher recently refused to guarantee mining would not go ahead in the inner-west suburb. During an interview on Macquarie Radio recently, Mr Hartcher said he would not “say where coal seam gas extraction is or isn’t going to take place”. His comments caused further frustration for Stop Coal Seam Gas’ Jacinta Green.

“He is completely capable of stopping this,” she said. There are concerns coal seam gas mining may cause air, water and noise pollution as well as the disruption of native habitats.

Mr Hartcher said no decisions about coal seam gas mining would be made until it was scientifically proven that coal seam gas extraction is safe.

Ms Green said the state government kept putting off decisions pending research and completion of a strategic land use policy.
