Rocks Touted to Fix Salty Water

A researcher says volcanic rocks could be the answer to salinity problems in the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton in central Queensland.

CQ University researcher Ben Kele has been using the rocks to clean up water pumped out of coal seam gas wells.

Complaints have increased in recent months about a salty taste in Rockhampton's drinking water, with some blaming the release of floodwater from coal mines.

Mr Kele says a trial of passing water through volcanic rocks has been successful in reducing salt levels.
