THE state government inquiry into coal seam gas made its way to Taree on Monday and a number of Great Lakes residents were there including Great Lakes Council’s manager of natural systems Gerard Tuckerman.
Also there was Greg Smith who took the opportunity to raise issues of concern specifically in relation to the oyster industry.
“Local oyster farmers do not want a repeat of the acid sulphate crisis. For them, coal seam gas mining represents another potential polluting of their waterways, another major blunder through lack of knowledge. They want the area declared a No Mining Zone.”
He came away horrified at the response to a number of his questions from some of the seven sitting on the inquiry panel headed by chairperson Robert Brown (MLC Shooters and Fishers Party) and deputy chairperson Jeremy Buckingham (the Greens). The remaining panel members are Rick Colless (The Nationals), Greg Donnelly (Labor), Scott MacDonald (Liberal), Dr Peter Phelps (Liberal) and Peter Primrose (Labor).
Mr Smith is concerned by the attitude of those sitting on the inquiry – that some have already made up their minds on the issue.
