Mining Tax Now a Coalition Dilemma

Amid the tumult of last week's visit by the US President, Barack Obama, Julia Gillard's focus remained squarely on the domestic agenda and the week ahead.

On Thursday, sometime around Obama meeting the Prime Minister and her cabinet and his address to the Parliament, Gillard managed to shoehorn in a meeting with Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott to discuss the mining tax.

On Friday, before flying from Darwin to Indonesia for the East Asia Summit, she spoke by phone for half an hour with Andrew Wilkie.

After some toing and froing, the government will push to make this week - the last time Parliament will sit until February - a winner by having the House of Representatives pass the legislation.
