Lismore city council has told Metgasco that their application for conducting exploration activities on council owned land has been withdrawn and that they should remove their drilling rigs immediately.
In an email to a local environmental protection group, Mayor Jenny Dowell confirmed council voted on the resolution last night at a special meeting. After being alerted by concerned local residents to the presence of the drill rigs, an investigation by council revealed that the conditions in an exploration application from September this year had not been met and no further correspondence had been received from the company. Mayor Dowell said drilling or any kind of exploration should not have commenced and that all future applications will need to be considered by council.
Mayor Dowell thanked the community group Rock Valley Gas Rangers for alerting the council to the presence of the drilling rigs.
