It seems that Queensland is abundant in natural resources - in particular coal, gas and minerals. The problem is getting at the stuff. We're all aware of the battles being fought over Coal Seam Gas extraction on farming and near residential land in the state...
Now Billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer's company, Waratah Coal, is planning an open cut mine on the Bimblebox Nature Refuge, near Alpha, east of Longreach - home to a number of endangered Australian finches. The State Government says on their website that a nature refuge is perpetual on freehold land, attached to the land title, and binds successive owners of the land.
The owner of Bimblebox nature refuge Paola Cassoni says she entered into the nature refuge believing it was protecting the land forever….but now that doesn't quite seem to be the case.
