Farmers Question Use of CSG Water for Cropping

The NSW Farmers' Association is questioning claims water produced during coal seam gas extraction can be used for cropping.

Santos has told the state inquiry into the industry that treated saline water has been used to grow leukeena in Queensland.

The company says the crop is now being grazed by cattle.

But Farmers Association president Fiona Simson isn't convinced.

"Santos when they say that is talking about one specific site in Queensland where they have tried that and it seems to be working." he said.

"Now, there is a huge difference between irrigating a crop such as a salt tolerant crop such as leukeena to irrigating a crop of sorghum or a crop of wheat or a crop of corn."
