Drilling 'Threat to Water' in Great Artesian Basin

LANDHOLDERS in the southern Gulf country of north Queensland fear exploration by coal-seam gas mining companies could threaten the Great Artesian Basin.
Concerns are growing that the industry may contaminate the basin's aquifers.

The first 10 CSG exploration bores are being drilled on grazing properties around Hughenden and Richmond, 500km west of Townsville.

Sue Dillon, of farmer organisation Agforce, said the region was seen as fresh ground by coal-seam gas prospectors.

Mining companies including Westside, Queensland Energy Resources, Exoma and Origin Energy have exploration licences in the Gulf country, on the northern fringe of the Galilee Basin.
