Gloucester clash on coal seam gas

Negotiations today over the future of coal seam gas explorer AGL's Gloucester Gas Project will spark protester opposition.

The project's community consultative committee is scheduled to meet company representatives today to discuss a promised review of AGL's water studies.

The review was agreed to by AGL after the Barrington-Gloucester-Stroud Preservation Alliance blockaded an access road and halted operations at a site south of Gloucester for two weeks in December.

Alliance spokesman E.B Phillips met the company yesterday in preparation for today's meeting.
Mr Phillips said yesterday existing water studies were "flawed" and the committee would not be able to choose a suitable reviewer.

He said there were two parts to the existing AGL water studies and only one phase was released.

"The meeting should be abandoned," Mr Phillips said.

"The impression is that AGL is trying to push things through."

When the blockade was taken down, AGL agreed to defer operations until the review of the project's existing water studies was complete and its results published.
