Gas dispute nipped before it begins

A DISPUTE appears to have been averted between one of the Hunter region’s biggest thoroughbred racing horse studs, Coolmore, and underground coalmine development company, NuCoal.

The 3300 hectare international stud, which runs about 1000 horses, is within the company’s 28 square kilometre Doyles Creek exploration area around Jerrys Plains.

Without attracting media attention, Coolmore representatives have refused, over the past year, to allow coal exploration drilling on the farm.

It has now been confirmed that a potential dispute with Coolmore evaporated last month in a settlement with the state government after a Land and Environment Court case between NuCoal and blind Apple Tree Flat farmer Ian Moore.

When the court granted access to Mr Moore’s property Resources Minister Chris Hartcher called on NuCoal officials to voluntarily suspend all exploration activities until an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) inquiry was completed into the way the exploration licence was granted.
