Dredging to double along Queensland coast

Marine Park Tourism Operators executive director Col McKenzie with Greens Senator Larissa Waters.

The federal government plans to double the amount of sea bed dredging inside the Great Barrier Reef's world heritage area, despite ongoing problems in Gladstone Harbour.

Senate estimates figures, released this morning by Greens Senator Larissa Waters, show plans to increase seabed dredging by 17 times the October 2010 levels in order to allow super tankers to remove oil and natural gas from Queensland ports.

A coalition of coral reef scientists, tourism operators and seafood industry representatives combined with the Greens today to slam the federal government's plans.
