US firm grows algae in Australia desert

Aurora Algae is growing algae in seawater ponds in the desert to help produce bio-diesel renewable fuel for the mining industry.

Six ponds have already been built and are being used by a US company in the Western Australian town to grow algae.

Hundreds, eventually thousands, of tonnes of algae that is.

Aurora Algae says it has developed technology to grow algae by combining seawater, carbon dioxide and sunlight.

The company will produce three main products in commercial quantities from it: renewable bio-diesel fuel to sell to the mining industry; Omega-3 oil for dietary supplement products and protein-rich biomass for use as aquaculture or animal feedstock.

Aurora Algae plans to privately raise $US100 million ($A97.21 million) this year to fund its next expansion stage.

A $US22 million ($A21.39 million) raising last year left it fully-funded to operate a profitable 100-hectare commercial plant from early 2013.

It is backed by three venture capital firms, including major US company Oak Investment Partners, and is likely to publicly list in the US next year.
