Union pipes up on water security

THE Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) says investment in Orange will stall if the city’s water supply is not secured by the Macquarie River pipeline.

The AWU has spoken out in favour of the pipeline proposal, which has attracted criticism from farming, fishing and environmental groups.

Western region organiser Alan Haynes said Orange’s critically low water level two years ago would have affected the confidence of business in investing in the city.

“Absolutely,” Mr Haynes said.

“Without a guaranteed water supply they wouldn’t do it.”

The AWU believes the pipeline project is essential to secure the residential water supply so that the supply of treated effluent to Cadia mine is guaranteed.

“It does take pressure off the water that goes to Cadia. It guarantees the future of that operation. There are challenges with mining, no-one denies them. Everybody needs to try and work together,” Mr Haynes said.
