Mine's new owners visit town

YANCOAL Australia executives were in Collie this week, having a closer look at what they had bought and meeting staff and Collie civic, political and union leaders.

Yancoal completed its purchase of Premier Coal from Wesfarmers on Friday, December 31, after receiving all necessary regulatory approvals from Australian and Chinese government authorities in mid-December.

And it promptly dropped Wesfarmers from the company name.

“In the short-term, other than rolling out new branding under the new name of ‘Premier Coal Limited’, it will largely be business-as-usual at the mine," said Yancoal Australia’s managing director, Murray Bailey.

“Yancoal is committed to continuing to develop the strong relationships that Premier Coal has with the community.”

Eventually Yancoal would like to up production from its Collie mine. “We have the capacity to increase production,” he said. “We have the reserves, expertise and capability.

“I would hope this would lead to more jobs.”
