Mayor accused of politicking over mine ban

SOMERSET Regional Council is facing a confrontation with the State Government after voting for a ban on coal exploration and coal seam gas mining within its boundaries.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said there was too much risk for the council to back the developments, but the industry has accused him of electioneering.

The council's opposition is based on its proximity to the Wivenhoe and Somerset dams, which provide drinking water for Brisbane.

Its decision adds to mounting criticism of the expansion of coal mining and coal seam gas, which has already forced the State Government to impose buffer zones around towns of more than 1000 people.

The Opposition has also backed a push from the Scenic Rim Regional Council, west of the Gold Coast, to have CSG activities banned within its boundaries.
