A law giving coal-seam gas producers a royalty-free period is being reviewed.

The New South Wales Government is reviewing a law that gives producers of coal-seam gas a five-year royalty-free period.

The law was introduced in the early 1990s and means coal-seam gas companies pay no royalties on gas extracted during the first five years of production. It's not until the 10th year of production that they have to pay the full rate of 10 per cent.

The Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham says in Queensland a 10 per cent royalty rate is charged from the first day of production.
