Lock the Gate Alliance Northern Rivers is alarmed by recent revelations that coal seam gas company Metgasco is operating outside the law in the region.
Documents obtained under Government Information Public Access (GIPA) legislation and a Richmond Valley Council Business Paper released on Friday disclose that the company is operating wastewater holding ponds at Piora Quarry in Casino without a development consent. The ponds store potentially toxic drilling fluids and water produced by coal seam gas exploration activities around Casino.
“The Council documents reveal that of the two ponds being operated by Metgasco at the Council owned quarry, one was constructed without ever obtaining an approval and the other pond’s development consent expired in September 2010,” said Boudicca Cerese, Lock the Gate Northern Rivers spokesperson. “These holding ponds are being operated illegally by Metgasco and have been for a considerable period of time.”
