Stop CSG Illawarra will host a community conference on March 25 to discuss the impacts of the coal seam gas industry and the campaign to halt it in New South Wales. Wollongong's Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery will open the conference, and Wollongong City Council has agreed to waive all fees for the use of the city's Town Hall on the day.
Wollongong City Councilors have been generally supportive of the community campaign. In October last year it voted unanimously to urge the NSW government to ban CSG mining in the region's water catchments.
The conference aims to further inform the community of the risks posed by the CSG industry and also to build organisational capacity for the campaign to expand.
Stop CSG Illawarra says on its website: “This community has — so far — halted the plan to develop a gas field in our drinking water catchment. But, unbelievably given the mounting evidence of the risks, the state government still supports the industry.
