Environment groups have characterised yesterday’s report from Santos in relation to previous Eastern Star Gas operations in the Pilliga as ‘too little too late’ and asked Santos to leave the forest for good.
“Santos statements today completely vindicate our claims that coal seam gas operations in the Pilliga have been a complete mess, creating a risky environmental disaster zone” said Carmel Flint, spokesperson for the Northern Inland Council for the Environment.
“The Santos report admits to an appalling litany of failures – toxic coal seam gas water has been spilled, native bushland cleared and creek systems that flow into the Murray Darling Basin polluted. The credibility of the coal seam gas industry is in tatters
.
“The report acknowledges more than 20 environmental incidents relating to waste management problems, over-clearing of bushland at up to 39 well sites, kangaroo deaths in water ponds, and high levels of salt in water discharged into creeks.
“We have seen nothing from Santos to suggest that they will be any better at managing such a damaging mining practice in a sensitive environment like the Pilliga – if this much damage has been done in the exploration phase, how much worse would it be with 1,100 production wells.
