THE Corangamite Shire Council will pressure the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to closely monitor noise levels at Port Campbell's gas plants.
Residents bothered by noise from the Origin and TRUenergy gas plants met with the council this week to go over the issue, which they claim has been self-regulated for years.
Councillor Matt Makin said the EPA was responsible for monitoring noise pollution but had been unable to monitor conditions at the plants for more than a week at a time.
"These are issues that never have simple solutions and we have to work with the residents to see that the gas companies operate within their licensing conditions," he said.
"One of the main issues is around compliance with noise conditions and clearly that is the responsibility of the EPA to enforce, so we'll be trying to persuade the EPA to increase noise monitoring.
"They are an independent government authority but this is a significant enough issue for local residents that we need to advocate a solution."
Cr Makin said the council would urge the EPA to monitor noise levels for longer periods than it had in the past.
