Metgasco Denies Wrong Doing Despite Council Evidence

Lock the Gate Northern Rivers is concerned that gas company Metgasco is refusing to admit any wrongdoing in relation to the illegal operation of coal seam gas wastewater ponds near Casino.

“In a statement made to ABC radio Metgasco’s CEO claims that the development consents they hold for the wastewater holding ponds are current and that the 2007 consent was granted for two ponds,” said Boudicca Cerese, spokesperson for Lock the Gate Alliance Northern Rivers.

... “This directly contradicts the information provided by Richmond Valley Council in their recently released business paper.”

“The council document clearly states that consent for the wastewater storage pond lapsed in 2010 and that its ongoing use by Metgasco is illegal,” said Ms. Cerese. “They also affirm that a second pond in use at the site has not been approved.”

“This latest statement from Metgasco is quite alarming as it would appear that they are refusing to be held accountable for their actions and that they do not respect the authority of local government,” said Ms. Cerese.

“Given the serious breaches of law committed by Metgasco, their refusal to take responsibility for their actions and the damaging nature of coal seam gas operations, we believe that it is entirely inappropriate for Richmond Valley Council to allow Metgasco on-going access to public land,” said Ms. Cerese.

“We are therefore calling on Council to reject any new applications by Metgasco for use of the council owned quarry site.”
