Government rules out CSG mining in national park

The State Government has given assurances that a National Park south-west of Muswellbrook will be off limits to coal seam gas exploration, ensuring one of the world's rarest plants is protected.

The company Leichhardt Resources has an exploration licence in partnership with Planet Gas for land which includes vast areas of the Wollemi National Park.

The park is home to one of the world's oldest and rarest trees - the Wollemi Pine.

The Widden Stud has been in the area for 150 years and General Manager Derek Field says coal seam gas activity could ruin waterways and pose a bushfire risk.

"We have a great environment here," he said. "The horse came here first so it is a major concern."
Mr Field says moving the stud is not an option if coal seam gas activities threaten its operations.
