Bid to jet city into the future

PLANS have been lodged today with Toowoomba Regional Council for a large, jet-capable airport on the city's outskirts.

The proposed airport will be located at Wellcamp, west of Toowoomba within the Wellcamp Charlton Enterprise Area, and will be open to commercial planes and the general public.

Major Toowoomba company Wagners is the project's sole proponent.

Wagners Global Services chairman John Wagner said it would be situated on an existing airstrip at Wellcamp, near the site of Wagners' planned state-of-the-art composite fibre factory.

Mr Wagner said the airport would be vital to the industrial estate realising its full potential.
"What we've identified talking to potential tenants for that industrial estate is that we need to have a decent airstrip to be able to service their customers," he said.

Mr Wagner said Toowoomba's current airport was not adequate.

He said the airport at Wellcamp would be capable of handling a Boeing 747, though "that was unlikely".
