An Upper Hunter author is warning communities in the region, they risk becoming wastelands, if coal mines and coal seam gas companies continue to expand their operations.
Sharyn Munro is in Merriwa today, addressing the Country Women's Association, before speaking at a public meeting of the Merriwa Healthy Environment Group.
The 64 year old was prompted to write a book about the impacts of coal mining after investigating air pollution around Singleton and Muswellbrook.
Ms Munro says it is short sighted to focus too much attention on just the mining industry.
"If you're too dependent on one particular industry, they will just stop production, they will not be thinking how is the community going to manage?" she said.
