Experts to study groundwater

A team of scientists from the University of Southern Queensland has been formed to examine the extent of the state's underground water assets.

The Groundwater Research Group will also study the effect coal seam gas, mining and agriculture has on groundwater.

Lead scientist Jochen Bundschuh says it will explore a range of issues, including the connection between aquifers and the rate at which they replenish.

He says the findings will be independent.

"There are several consultancies but it's very important, for example, to asses these groundwater resources from an independent institution as we are, for example a university, because at university the idea is to serve the entire society," he said.

He says there is still very little known about the precious resource.

"We do not understand the entire surface, groundwater interaction system, therefore we need a much more detailed scientific knowledge and we need to use a model for example and more and better monitoring systems," he said.
