A group of farmers in the Coonamble area have decided to 'lock the gate' against coal seam gas exploration.
About 300 people attended a meeting yesterday to discuss the impact of gas exploration on the water sources in the region.
The secretary of the Great Artesian Basin Protection Group Anne Kennedy says many farmers were not only unaware of their rights but that exploration lisences exist on their property.
She says the decision to oppose further exploration was unanimous.
"Someone in the audience jumped up and said 'look I want to move a motion that Coonamble locks its gates that we wont have this on our land'," she said.
"The Coonamble Shire Council mayor was unable to come and he rang me to apologise because he was in Sydney but he reiterated council's 100 per cent support for what we're doing and opposition to coal seam gas mining."
