Washington, D.C.—“U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s encouragement of Bulgarian officials to develop the nation’s energy resources was sound advice, but advocating that the country pursue fracking was unconscionable. Shale gas has no place in Bulgaria’s sustainable energy portfolio, especially because the Bulgarian Parliament recently voted 166 to six to suspend shale gas exploration. Secretary of State Clinton should respect the outcomes of Bulgaria’s democratic processes, even when they go against the interests of American oil and gas companies.
“U.S. oil and gas corporations such as Chevron should not determine the energy policies of our foreign allies. Shale gas has been linked to numerous public health and environmental problems, and now a global movement is underfoot to ban shale gas altogether.
