Still resolutely determined not to be a typical pop star, Natalie Merchant has signed on to tackle fracking, a concern most Americans aren't even aware of and even fewer understand.
The former 10,000 Maniacs singer will appear at a March 10 benefit concert in Binghampton, NY, in support of a ban on the use of hydraulic fracturing in the extraction of natural gas -- "fracking," in other words -- in New York State and elsewhere. The concert will be presented by the Finger Lakes CleanWaters Initiative.
Fracking has become a controversial topic in recent years, particularly after a U.K. report last year determined that the practice was likely the cause of earth tremors that occurred during a shale gas drilling test near Blackpool, England. The problem also came to light following several earthquakes last year centering on Youngstown, OH, an area where the drilling practice is common and earthquakes are rare.
