On 11 February 2012 dozens of Bulgarian and Romanian activists along with members of Frack Off braved the cold weather and staged a spectacular demonstration near the Romanian embassy in Kensington, London. With chemical suits, chants and street performers we protested against the proposed use of controversial ‘fracking’ to extract shale gas in Romania.
With the hydraulic fracturing method eleven to nineteen millions litres of fresh water mixed with sand and up to 900,000 litres of over 600 chemicals, some of which highly toxic, are injected up to 4 miles in the ground to extract shale gas. The dangerous fluid then comes back to surface but nearly 30 to 40 percent of it stays underground permanently. And the “produced water” that comes back is put into ponds and left to evaporate in the air. As a result of this method, nature, groundwater wells and air are polluted and in some cases contaminated tap water can even be set aflame. People and animals living near shale gas wells risk to get permanently ill with neurological, respiratory diseases and even cancer.
