Gladstone's commercial fishermen are paying a private marine veterinarian to find out why so many fish are getting sick.
A mystery illness has plagued fish and other marine life at Gladstone, at one stage closing the harbour for three weeks last year.
The fishers claim the Gladstone Ports Corporation dredging is to blame and want the Queensland Government to buy back their fishing licences. On Monday, about 60 Gladstone fishermen and business owners launched a $20 million compensation claim for income losses caused by the expanding liquefied natural gas industry.
Matt Landos, who was involved in an investigation into deformed fish embryos at a Noosa hatchery, has been employed to identify what's causing outbreaks of lesions and cloudy eyes in Gladstone's fish.
An independent panel set up by the Government has not been able to find a cause.
